CMEV tells EC not to deploy GMOA members on polls duty

Southern Province Industrial Development Board Chairman Nilanga Hendawitharana has reportedly been involved in campaigning for SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) has complained to the Elections Commission.

The election watchdog on October 23 complained to the Election Commission that Hendawitharana was actively campaigning for the SLPP candidate while serving in his post.

Meanwhile, the CMEV has notified the Election Commission that a medical doctor attached to the Anuradhapura government hospital had attempted to persuade several women admitted to the maternity ward to vote for SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“We have notified the Commission and the relevant officials to take prompt action to prevent such unwarranted campaigning activities,” the CMEV said.

“Adding to the trend of hospital-based election campaigning, an incident regarding the distributing promotion leaflets of SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa was reported to the CMEV from the Colombo Central Hospital.

The CMEV lodged a complaint against the alleged actions of the Director General of Colombo Central Hospital with the Election Commission,” the CMEV said in a post on Twitter.

The CMEV has also requested the Election Commission to reconsider the deployment of Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) members for election duties on election day as its Chairman is allegedly engaged in the promotion of the SLPP candidate.
