Issuing a special warning on severe thunderstorms accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at most parts of the island particularly Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces stated the Department of Meteorology.
Very heavy falls about 100-150 mm can be expected at some places in Kaluthara, Kegalle, Rathnapura, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Gampaha and Kandy districts.
Heavy falls about 75-100 mm can be expected at some places in Colombo, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.
The Department of Meteorology advises that people should seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms, avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms, avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc ,beware of fallen trees and power lines and for emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
