Despite the reduction of excessive powers through the 19th Amendment, the next president of the country will continue to hold positions such as head of the executive, head of government and cabinet of Ministers and, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka .
He said that although the arbitrary powers of the Executive President have now been curtailed to some extent, the presidency is still a powerful position.
The Megapolis and Western Development Minister stated this addressing a business forum held in Anuradhapura recently.
According to the Minister, the winner of the upcoming Presidential election will have the opportunity to establish a strong government with over 113 seats in Parliament.
“The majority in parliament is essential for the next president to carry out a stable rule”, he stressed.
Ranawaka also said within the upcoming presidential poll there are four elections, through which the head of the executive, the government and the cabinet of Ministers and the Commander-in-chief of the armed forces will be selected.
The next president will have the power to dissolve the parliament by March next year, the Minister said and added that one who will win the presidential election will definitely win the general election too. However the Minister was confident of the current ruling coalition’s victory at the next parliamentary election.
