Supreme Court to hear IGP petition on Nov 13

The Fundamental Rights petition filed by Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, seeking an interim order suspending the President’s decision to send him on compulsory leave following the Easter Sunday attacks, was yesterday re-fixed for support on November 13 by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court fixed the petition to be taken up on November 13 since several other Fundamental Rights petitions filed over the liability of various parties for their roles in the Easter Sunday attacks were to be considered for leave to proceed on September 25 and 26. The IGP’s petition is to be taken up on top of the list on the next date. The Supreme Court bench comprised Justices Prasanna Jayawardena, Preethi Padaman Surasena, and S. Thurairajah.

The Secretary to the President, through the Attorney-General, had filed objections against the Fundamental Rights petition filed by Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, who sought an interim order suspending President’s decision to send him on compulsory leave following the Easter Sunday attacks.

Senior Counsel Viran Corea, with counsel Niran Anketell and Dushinka Nelson and instructed by Vidanapathirana Associates, appeared for IGP Jayasundara.

Additional Solicitor-General Indika Demuni De Silva, with Senior State Counsel Dr. Avanthi Perera, appeared for the President and the Attorney-General.
