The Cabinet approved a 50 percent increase in the amount of grade five scholarship rupees for rising juniors yesterday, Education Ministry sources yesterday told the Daily News.
This was in response to a Cabinet paper forwarded by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the sources said. .
The students who pass the grade five scholarship exams will now receive a scholarship award of Rs 750, up from the Rs 500 awarded in previous years, they said.
The students will get this award from grade six up to the conclusion of their Advanced Level studies.
About 130 000 students will receive the award.
The ministry sources said the government has increased the grade five scholarship grant with a focus to promote and serve the students and to strengthen the system of free education.
