Two arrested in chief jailor’s murder

A special police team has arrested two suspects along with a car in connection with the murder of the Welikada Prison training school’s chief jailor yesterday.Chief jailor Ruwan Jayaratne was shot dead near the Kuleegoda junction in Ambalangoda by an unidentified gunman on August 3. A T-56 assault rifle is believed to have been used in the killing.

The arrested suspects have been identified as accomplices of Podi Lasi, an underworld criminal in the South. Sources have revealed that the arrested are workers of a tourist hotel in Hikkaduwa. Podi Lasi had planned the murder from the prison and the two arrested had spied for the murder, police sources say.

Intelligence agencies have also begun an investigation into a prison officer, said to have connections with this murder.

Police believe that they will be able to arrest the gunman involved in the incident along with the T56 murder weapon soon.
