US upgrades SL travel advisory

The US State Department has updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka by lowering the ‘threat level’ for US government employees.

“On June 24, 2019, the Department lifted the ordered departure status of family members of US government employees under 18 as well as authorised departure status of non-emergency US government employees and family members,” the United States’ embassy’s website said.

The travel advice has been re-issued to notify that the ordered and authorised departure status of US government employees and their family members has been lifted.

The standard US government travel warning advises that terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transport hubs, markets, shopping malls, government facilities, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major events, educational institutions, airports, hospitals and other public areas. “The US government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in Sri Lanka due to the security environment,” it said.
