Five Soldiers Die in Yal Devi-Truck Crash

Five soldiers were killed and two others were critically injured when the truck they were travelling in was hit by a train in the Kirimurukkandy area in Kilinochchi yesterday, Army Media sources confirmed.

The victims were personnel attached to the Army Medical Corps and were attached to the Kilinochchi Army Hospital.

The collision had taken place when the truck was attempting to pass through an unprotected railway crossing in the Kirimurukkandy area in Kilinochchi.

The train had departed Colombo for Jaffna last morning and had collided with the Army truck at around 1.10 p.m. last afternoon. Among the dead are four Privates and a Corporal and the two injured are both Privates, Army sources disclosed. The dead have been identified as Privates Dissanayake, Herath, Sanjeewa, and Sirisena and, Corporal Jayasiri.

The two injured are Privates Roshan and Chamara. The wounded soldiers are being treated at the Kilinochchi Hospital.
