Easter bomber linked to 2013 metals container theft

One of the Easter bombers is now believed to have been involved in the theft of a whole shipping container carrying brass, iron and aluminium materials as far back as 2013, according to a Police filing in the Colombo Additional Magistrate Court.

The suicide bomber Mohamed Ibrahim Insaf Ahmed who blew himself at the Shangri-La Hotel on Easter Sunday and six others have been identified as the main suspects involved in this theft of a container load of Brass, Iron and Aluminium worth Rs.6.1 million on May 30, 2013.

Filing a report regarding this incident before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjana de Silva, the Grandpass Police said they have sought the Attorney General’s instructions regarding this incident.

The Grandpas Police informed court that they were conducting an investigation with regard to the theft of these metal materials worth Rs.6,166,525. When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranajana de Silva on January 29 this year, the suspect Mohomed Ibrahim Insaf Ahamed, had then appeared before the court.

The other six suspects were identified as Abdul Cader Mohamed Mansoor of Baseline road, Dematagoda, Mohamed Buhari Mohamed Suwar of Maligawatta, Kodithuwakku Hettiarachchige Athula Dassanayake of Kelaniya, Mohamed Naseer Mohamed Aslam of Wattala and, Nawagamuwa Dewage Jinesh Nalaka of Grandpass. Mohomed Inrahim Insaf Ahmed was identified as a resident of Mahawila Park, Baseline Road, Dematagoda.

Meanwhile, the seventh suspect in the case had been released from the case following instructions given by the Attorney General.

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for September 10.
