Tight security plan for Vesak week

A comprehensive security plan will be put in place around the country to ensure the safety of the public by the security and Defence Forces for Vesak Day celebrations.

Special security measures will be implemented today, on Vesak Poya Day and the day following.

The special security plan is in addition to the security measures taken by the Defence Forces following the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Officers of the intelligence services will continue to provide security for the public while Civil and Buddhist Affairs societies have volunteered to provide their support to strengthen the security measures.

The Security Forces request devotees not to carry large bags and parcels when entering temples and religious places. Forces also request the public to stay vigilant and inform nearby security officers if they notice any suspicious behaviour or belongings.

Police will be taking drunk drivers into custody, they will also be arresting individuals appearing at religious places after consuming alcohol. Police request the public to abide by law at all times and to pay special attention on the safety of children.

Devotees are also requested not to idle at religious places after carrying out their practices.

Over 5000 officers attached to the Traffic Police have been deployed across the country.
