Ten dead in van-bus collision

Ten persons including three children and three women were reportedly killed following an accident.

A private bus headed to Diyatalawa from Trincomalee collided head on to a van that was travelling in the opposite direction to Mahiyangana killing ten passengers. The accident was reported at around 1.30 am in front of the National School of Mahiyangana.

However it was also reported that 12 passengers including three children and three women were travelling inside the van at the time of the accident and 10 were killed on the spot just after the accident due to their fatal injuries.

However two passengers were admitted to the Government Hospital in Mahiyangana with the assistance given by the neighboring community who had rushed to the place within few seconds.

According to the investigations, it was also divulged that the victims were the permanent residents of the Baticaloa area.

The suspect Bus driver who had driven the vehicle in very reckless manner was arrested by the officers attached to the Mahiyangana Police Station.  

Further investigations are being conducted.
