The government yesterday decided to recommend Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as the Internal Affairs Minister in addition to the portfolios recommended earlier.
This was discussed at length when a group of senior ministers of the UNF government met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees yesterday.
The Prime Minister was scheduled to inform Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to supervise all activities of the Internal Affairs Ministry until he is given charge of the Ministry.
It is the Internal Affairs Minister who is vested with powers to grant final approval for a person's citizenship or dual citizenship. The recommendation of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka for the post of Internal Affairs Minister will be submitted to President Maithripala Sirisena on his return from his private visit to Japan.
