Opposition lied about majority again - UNP MP

The Opposition led by Mahinda Rajapaksa in November, last year lied to the public claiming that it had the required majority to form the government and attempted to take over the government by force, Puttalam District UNP MP Hector Appuhamy said.

Once again, they have lied to the people saying that they have the majority to defeat the budget and we have proved them wrong, Appuhamy told the press at the UNP Headquarters ‘Sirikotha’ yesterday.

He said that as the Tamil MPs supported the Budget 2019, the Opposition has begun calling them terrorists. Appuhamy said the October 26 action of the Opposition violated Sri Lanka’s constitution.

“We recall that both President Sirsiena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 5 addressing a rally near parliament square boasted that they had the required majority and hence, Mahinda Rajapaksa would be made the Prime Minister. But we told them that, they had no majority in Parliament and we have proved them wrong on both occasions”, he said.

“Passing the second reading of the budget with a good majority we have shown them, that we still maintain the majority to govern. We have 119 MPs in favour of our government and the Opposition has only 71”, he said.
