Crocodile threat in rural tanks

Due to the infestation of crocodiles in minor tanks and anicuts around the Dambulla Ibbankatuwa Mahaweli reservoir, residents are in fear of using the tank water for domestic purposes.

According to them, crocodiles are rife in the Ibbankatuwa Mahaweli reservoir. The creatures are reaching minor tanks through the feeding canals connected to the reservoir.

Some of them invade by land.

In the past, a youth was attacked by a crocodile when he was bathing at Thalakiriyagama tank.

Warning boards have been set up by the village youth society at some selected tanks.

However, the public request authorities to take immediate action to remove these crocodiles in minor tanks.
