Bands beckon

A dazzling display was put by students of some of the leading schools across the country in the finale of ‘Band the Band’ reality competition which was held recently at the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium.

The girls of Holy Cross College, Gampaha, walked away with the trophy by clinching first place in the first ever reality brass band held across the world. Organised by the Past Pupils Students Association of Nalanda College, Colombo, the competition saw more than 100 brass bands from schools from all over the island gathering together to make musical merriment for a considerable span.

The reality television show, the first of its kind, was telecast on ITN. It was backed by the Education Ministry and ITN.

Holy Cross College, Gampaha, Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo, St. Peter’s College, Bamblapitiya, Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala and Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Panadura made it to the finals. St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, won the second place. They also earned the title of the Most Popular Musical groups. Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Panadura, clinched third place.
