100,000 lenses donated

Health Ministry has already provided over 100,000 eye lenses and it is expected to increase this number to 200,000 by the end of this year, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

According to Minister Senaratne, a total of 67,000 eye surgeries had been done at the national Eye Hospital in 2017. Only 0.05 patients were infected with germs.

This is a significant success and the dedication of doctors contributed to achieve this success.

He was addressing a ceremony held at the national eye Hospital recently to mark the provision of 100,000 free eye lenses.

Minister Senaratne pointed out that 95 percent of Consultant eye Surgeons supported the programme of providing free lenses for the patients who seek treatment from state hospitals.

Only five percent of doctors opposed it. Various efforts were made to make the programme unsuccessful but the programme overcame all those hazards.
