Case against former DIG expedited

Kayts District Judge Anton Judeson ordered the Criminal Investigation Department and police to take measures to expedite the hearing of the case against former Jaffna DIG Lalith Jayasinghe.

The District Judge made this order when allegations that DIG Jayasinghe had aided the release of Swiss Kumar, who is the main suspect in the murder of schoolgirl Vidya following a gang-rape, from police custody, were taken up before him.

The 18-year-old victim, Shivaloganathan Vidya, was gang-raped and killed on May 13, 2015, in Punkudutivu, Kayts, Jaffna.

In connection with this incident, action was filed against nine suspects including Sashikumar (alias Swiss Kumar), Poobalasingham Indrakumar, Poobalasingham Jeyakumar, Poobalasingham Jeyakumar, Poobalasinhgam Thavakumar, Mahalingam Sashindran, Thillenadan Chandrahasan, Sivadevan Dushanth, Palani Rupasingham Kugadasan, in the Jaffna High Court.

The CID arrested former DIG Lalith Jayasinghe on June 17, 2017 and filed a case against him for aiding and abetting the release of Swiss Kumar through a sub-inspector, who is currently absconding.
