Gold jewellery worth Rs.130,000 and Rs. 59,000 in cash belonging to the family of veteran actor Sathischandra Edirisinghe had been robbed at a hotel in the Ella area, while they were on a trip during the weekend, Police said.
According to Police, the incident had taken place between 10 pm on Friday and 5 am on Saturday while they were a sleep.
Sathischandra Edirisinghe’s son had lodged a complaint with the Ella Police claiming that a gold chain and a pendant worth Rs.130,000 and Rs.47,000 in cash had been stolen from their room. In addition, Rs.12,000 in cash belonging to his brother-in-law and his wife had also been stolen from the other room.
The family had been in the Ella area on a picnic from January 17. The incident took place at a hotel situated along the Ella- Wellawaya Road, where they had booked four rooms. They had visited the Ella area on Friday and returned to the hotel at around 9.20 p.m. Police suspect that the thief might have entered the room through an open window after they had gone to sleep.
Statements have been recorded from the manager and a Hotel worker by the Police.
