SLPP councillor arrested over unruly behaviour at CPC

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Colombo Municipal Councillor Kulathissa Deeganage was arrested yesterday by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in connection with the unruly behaviour at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda.

He was remanded till January 18 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne.

The Councilor was arrested over the charge of obstructing Minister Arjuna Ranatunge from performing his duties.

CCD officials informed court that a tense situation had prevailed as a result of the councillor's unruly behaviour. CCD further submitted that they had identified names of the persons following CCTV footage obtained from the CPC premises.

The CCD stated that they would take action to arrest them.

The Magistrate stated that giving evidence at the magisterial inquiry, the suspect stated that he entered the CPC premises with some representatives from his village.The attorney appearing on behalf of the suspect stated that some people were prepared to surrender themselves to court.

The Magistrate instructed the CCD to arrest the other suspects and produce them before court.

The CCD also stated that they had arrested this suspect following CCTV footage obtained from the CPC.

President's Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe appearing on behalf of the suspect pleaded for bail.

The Magistrate ordered the CCD to arrest the other suspects and produce them in court.

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for January 18.
