Remember The Motorola RAZR? Well, It’s coming back

Remember when having phones like the Nokia N95 and Sony Ericsson K850i made you the coolest person on the block? Well, added to that was the Motorola RAZR. Pronounced as Razor, the Motorola RAZR was introduced in July 2004. With a catchy number of advertisements, Motorola made no qualms that they had big plans for the Motorola RAZR.

The Motorola RAZR was indeed a popular phone

Over the phone’s 4-year run, the Motorola RAZR V3 sold over 130 million units. This solidified the device as the world’s best-selling clamshell phone to date. Sadly though, as years went on and phones became smarter and faster, the Motorola RAZR lineup of phones was discontinued.

Through numerous variations such as the RAZR2, Droid RAZR, and Droid RAZR Maxx, Motorola tried their best to keep the lineage of the Motorola RAZR alive. There were plans for the Motorola RAZR3 but things didn’t quite work out as planned and it was scrapped. Now, the Motorola RAZR is out to make a comeback. That’s right. A resurrected model of the Motorola RAZR is expected by February 2019 priced at a whopping $1,500.

Now let that sink in for a bit

If you recall, HMD Global brought back the much-loved Nokia 3310 with an updated design and 4G connectivity as well. Now that was not exactly a high-end phone, to begin with, so the price of the rebooted (pun intended) Nokia 3310 was around $60.

The original Motorola RAZR cost around $600 when launched in 2004. So why the more than double price for the reboot? Well, according to the Wall Street Journal, Lenovo, the owner of Lenovo is working on the new Motorola phone so that it has a foldable display. We’ve seen a number of foldable screen prototypes at CES 2019 so it seems the next obvious step to bring back a legend with new features.

Apart from the rumor of a foldable display, there’s nothing else that we know about the rumored new Motorola device. Will it have a 2019 at the end of the model? For $1,500 we are certainly expecting a lot. That price range is essentially flagship level and as such we would be a tad disappointed if it were anything less. Off the top of our heads, we’d expect the latest Snapdragon processor, 6/8GB of RAM, 64/128GB of onboard storage and expandable storage along with a powerful camera setup.

Now once again, we emphasize that these are what we would expect from a $1,500 smartphone. Lenovo and Motorola might go on a completely different approach and package something entirely new. We can’t really say. But if they’re going about it, they might as well add a personalized butler as well, just like Vertu did.

Care to venture a guess about the features of the new Motorola RAZR? We would love to hear from you.
