Philippines Speaker assures Parliament’s support for Sri Lanka

The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines and former President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said that the Philippines Parliament would extend its fullest support to implement the programmes proposed by Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to assist Sri Lanka.

Speaker Arroyo made the above comment when she met President Maithripala Sirisena in Manila on Thursday.“The Speaker expressed her satisfaction over the matters agreed upon by the President in order to enhance cooperation in the field of agriculture between the two countries and said the Parliament would fully support this endeavour.

President Maithripala Sirisena commended the Philippines government for its efforts in combating the illegal drug trafficking.

President Sirisena further observed that the drug menace is the biggest hurdle to develop the country and urged cooperation from the Philippines government for Sri Lanka’s fight against illegal drug trafficking.

During this meeting the two leaders also discussed on establishing a Philippines Embassy in Colombo to broaden relations between the two countries.

The President’s Media Division in a press release said President Sirisena assured the Speaker that he would take steps to find a suitable land in Colombo for the embassy.

President Sirisena explained about the steps taken to further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries and requested the assistance of the Philippines Parliament to make those initiatives a success.

Thereafter, the President of the Philippines Senate met with the President Sirisena for talks,” the release added.
