Iranamadu tank water to be used to solve water problem

Minister of City Planning water Supply and Higher Education Rauff Hakeem said the drinking water problem could be solved by supplying water to the people in Kilinotchi and Jaffna from the Iranamadu Tank.

The Minister further said,  he got the idea about the Irannamadu tank occurred to him during his visit to  flood - hit areas recently and felt the water crisis in Jaffna could be solved by using water from the Iranamadu Tank.

Minister Hakeem said, alternative ways of supplying water had also been brought to his notice but he would pursue the idea of using water from the Iranamadu tank. Minister Hakeem also said, that steps should be taken on the proposal that have been presented to provide drinking water from sea water in Jaffna, Kalpitya, Ampara and Pottuvil districts where the drinking water problems is severe.

A disscussion on water supply sanitary project and releted activities in the water supply sector in 2019 was held recently with the participation of Minister Hakeem, State Minister Lucky  Jayawardhane and Secretary of the Ministry Priyantha Mayadunne. Seniour Officers including the Chairman of the Water Supply and Drainage Board and Ministry of City Planning and water supply K.A.Ansar, General Manager Deepthi Sumanasekara annd Directors of water supply projects attended the event.

A disscussion was held on several waater supply projects including the Kelani river South Bank water Supply project. Katana water supply project etc.

Disscussion were held on the problems regarding the provision of pipe water to the areas in the Kilinotchi district near the Iranamadu tank.

Jaffna Deputy General Manager of Water Supply and Drainage Board Bharathithasan said that using solar power is more profitable than using electicity for equipment when supplying water to the Jaffna district.

Officials representing all districts were called and their ideas were and insrtuctions have been given to complete all proposals operated currently.
