The five suspects who were arrested with 95.88 kilograms of heroin worth over Rs.1 billion in the Kollupitiya area on January 22, were yesterday remanded till February 8 by Colombo Fort Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage.

On a previous occasion, the Magistrate allowed the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) to detain and question from the suspects.

The PNB informed the court that the five suspects including two Americans and an Afghan were arrested on Tuesday (22) at a luxury apartment complex in Kollupitiya after being found in possession of 95.88 kgs of heroin worth more than Rs.1,140 million.

The PNB further said that among the five suspects were two Sri Lankans, aged 39 and 41, residents in Hikkaduwa.

The PNB also said that the Police Special Task Force (STF) and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers carried out the arrests when they raided the first-floor apartment of the housing complex.

The PNB told the court that they arrested them at the Super Market in Kollupitiya. At the time of their arrest they had 1.062 kg of heroin in their possession.

PNB officials further said that the STF and PNB officers raided the luxury apartment and recovered the haul of heroin in four travelling bags hidden in two bed rooms.

“The two Americans, aged 29, 43 and the Afghan aged 45 were arrested at the apartment. The officers also recovered nine mobile phones, three laptops and an I-pad,” PNB sources added.
