Customs detect illegal cigarettes

Customs sleuths yesterday detained a Sri Lankan passenger with a stock of foreign-cigarettes at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, Customs Media Spokesperson Sunil Jayaratne said

He said that Customs officials managed to recover 33,800 cigarettes in 150 cartons and 190 other cigarette packets hidden inside his travelling bag.

The stock which is said to have been manufactured in the United Arab Emirates is estimated to be worth Rs.1.8 million.

The suspect, 42, is resident of the Mattakkuliya area and is employed in Dubai.

The suspect was fined of Rs.10,000 while the contraband was forfeited.
