With TES, Takas Wants To Make eCommerce simpler

Takas is not an unheard-of name. People visit them daily to buy everything from TVs to event tickets. They’ve dabbled in delivering goods via drones, to snapping up new investors from the likes of EAI Technologies and Hemas. Now, Takas aims to make an even bigger name for themselves. How? By launching Takas eCommerce Services (TES).

Simply put, Takas eCommerce Services is Takas’ own internally developed system for managing and maintaining the backend operations of their eCommerce platform. TES was under development since 2014 with modules and features being added and/or removed according to how well they performed.

The current version of TES is what powers Takas’ entire operation and is responsible for managing the vast amount of orders that the company processes on a day to day basis.

So how does it work? It all begins when you place an order

You see something you like. You add it to your cart. You choose either to pay cash on delivery or with your card. Meanwhile, in the background, a number of processes are running on the TES. There’s validation to see if your card is legitimate. If it’s a cash on delivery order, there’s a process to approve the order based on your past payment history.

Once the order has been placed, the system will check if the relevant item is in the warehouse. If it is, it will be shipped to the customer from there. If it’s not in the warehouse, it will have to be collected from a supplier. At this point, TES will inform the first-mile team, which collects the item from the supplier and brings it to the warehouse.

From there a team of quality control personnel inspect it to see that it’s in proper working order. All this is tracked through the TES platform so that everyone knows exactly what is happening at any given point.

Once the items are ready to be shipped out, it’s up to the courier to deliver the goods. The TES platform is capable of integrating into the existing systems of couriers. Once this happens, the system can get the location of the couriers themselves in real time. This ensures the correct goods go to the correct people at the correct time.

Once the goods have been delivered to the customer, and the courier signs off on it, he/she can, at the press of a button, tell the TES platform that the product has been delivered. Over at the Takas HQ, the operations team  will see a line of green ticks. Each green tick indicates an accomplished task in the order process. However, a red cross indicates that something went wrong and needs to be attended to immediately.

Alongside ensuring orders are delivered smoothly, the TES platform has a bunch of modules that are essential for eCommerce businesses. These range from warehouse & inventory management, supplier management, and customer relationship management. hese are all automated, integrated and taken care of by the TES platform.

This means that there is less human interaction and therefore fewer chances of human error occurring during any part of the process. Additionally, TES platform can be plugged into a front-end such as Magento, WooCommerce or Oracle ATG and set up with little to no issues.

According to Kalinga Athulathmudali – CTO of Takas, full deployment of the TES platform for an eCommerce site would take around 3-4 months. Installing TES takes far less time, the majority of this time is for user training, process re-engineering, hardware installation & testing. Takas provides all the support and user documentation needed as well as onsite support and remote assistance as well.

The TES platform also gives users the ability to benchmark their performance. Companies can set their own KPI (Key Performance Indicators). From there, they can assess how well they’re performing and makes sales forecasts as well.  

But how much does it cost? In terms of pricing, there would be the initial implementation charge. This would be followed by a subscription fee on a monthly basis. The exact subscription fee would vary depending on the number of users in a company.

Making eCommerce simpler across Asia

According to Lahiru Pathmalal – CEO of Takas, they have already signed up a client to implement the TES platform. And now, “We want to take the platform to a regional level”, he explained.

With Oracle systems being the most prevalent in markets such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India,  he believes the TES platform would provide a more flexible and cost-effective solution. Furthermore, because the TES platform can support both managed and unmanaged marketplaces, eCommerce platforms can scale up significantly faster at a fraction of the cost.

To quote Lahiru, “The product right now is one where there is heavy automation on repetitive tasks. With TES at its current standing, it’s now just a matter of monitoring the system as opposed to doing something physical. So, when an order comes in, you just monitor the process rather than physically doing it.”
