There was a time when people (including myself) would sit in front of their desktop or laptops and binge watch Netflix or YouTube. But now, we’re noticing a shift. With phone manufacturers packing bigger and bigger displays on to their smartphones, users are opting to watch the same content on their smartphones. Huawei seems to be riding this wave with the Huawei Y Max.
Taking things to the big screen, sort of
A 7.12” display on a smartphone? Some would call it madness. Think of how big that would be. Strangely though, that’s not the case with the Huawei Y Max. The 7.12” display feels not so different from a Huawei Mate 20. At a resolution of 2244*1080, the display on the Huawei Y Max comes at an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The display itself is an IPS LCD touchscreen and is quite a vibrant one at that too.
Interestingly, the Huawei Y Max is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, backed up by up to 6GB of RAM. For internal storage, you’re looking at either 64GB or 128GB with expandable storage via a MicroSD card. That bumps it up to an additional 256GB.

The other specs for the Huawei Y Max include a 16MP+2MP rear camera along with an 8MP front camera. Akin to most phones pushed out by the company, the Huawei Y Max also packs AI features into its cameras for intelligent scene recognition and scene optimization. If you find yourself recording a lot of clips, then the Huawei Y Max also has 1080p video recording at 30fps. Not the best in the market, but adequate.
Speakers powered by Dolby Atmos
As we said, the Huawei Y Max is aimed at those who enjoy watching video content on their smartphones. As such, the Huawei Y Max comes with speakers powered by Dolby Atmos. Packing a smart amplifier, the device is able to reach a loudness of around 80db.

This means you don’t need to connect your device to an external sound amplifier or speakers. The smart amplifier also detects the sound levels around the user and dynamically adjusts the sound levels as well. Obviously, we wouldn’t recommend maxing out the volume in a public place lest you have people chasing you down. For that, it’s better suited to use headphones or earphones as the Dolby Atmos technology works for them as well.
But you also need the battery for that, right?
A large concern for those who binge videos on their phones is the battery. Needless to say, watching videos at a stretch would drain the battery and the sound playback from the speakers would only add to that. But that all gets seen to by the massive 5,000mAh battery on the Huawei Y Max. According to Huawei, the Huawei Y Max is rated for 5 hours of gameplay, 8 hours of continuous video playback or 9 hours of continuous reading at maximum brightness.

Technically with the architecture of the Snapdragon processor, combined with Huawei’s battery saving techniques, this is entirely possible. We won’t know for sure but Huawei claims up to 2 days of use with a single charge.
Who is the Huawei Y Max for?
Well, if you’re a movie buff who spends a majority of their time binging the latest movies and TV series, then the Huawei Y Max would suit you nicely. The large 7.12” display, along with Dolby Atmos and the 5,000mAh battery means that you have a mini theatre in your pocket.
Also, unlike other devices, the Huawei Y Max doesn’t feel like you’re lugging around a huge phone. In fact, it looks a lot like a bigger version of their flagship Mate series.

Overall, there’s nothing new per se with the Huawei Y Max. The Dolby Atmos technology has been in almost all of their latest flagship and midrange smartphones. The only difference would be the loudness of the speakers. Again, nothing groundbreaking, But if you’re on the lookout for a phone to kick back and watch movies with, then it’s something worth looking at. In addition, if you’re looking for a smartphone with a massive battery, the Huawei Y Max can fit your needs as well.
