At the recently held, Global Telecom Awards, Sri Lanka bagged an interesting award. Ericsson and Dialog walked away as winners of the ‘IoT Initiative of the Year’ award. The award was given in recognition of Dialog’s Massive IoT network, supporting both Cat-M1 and Nb-IoT technologies. The network was implemented with the vision of accelerating the adoption of Internet of Things devices.

Already, Dialog has begun trials for IoT enabled smart electricity meters, power distribution monitoring systems, smart garbage bins, smart weather stations, and more. In fact, a few months back, we saw Dialog host an NB-IoT hackathon to encourage developers to build solutions for the network. With the IoT market expected to be worth $1.1 trillion according to the GSMA, it’s no wonder Dialog wants its slice of the pie.

What you can expect with 5G networks
Additionally, Ericsson has conducted IoT workshops & activated Massive IoT RAN software for Dialog’s existing LTE user base. In a nutshell, this is an upgrade for Dialog’s existing network. As a result, this would allow Dialog to offer wider coverage. It’s also expected to offer LTE speeds at lower power consumption. The network is also expected to allow enterprises to better utilize Internet of Things solutions. Such upgrades, we’ve seen are how we know we’re on the road to a 5G network.
In the future, Dialog and Ericsson aim to open Sri Lanka’s first Innovation Centre to develop 5G & IoT solutions. Currently, Dialog has stated that it expects to launch a 5G network in 2 years. Hopefully, we’ll also see news of affordable devices that can utilize these networks soon as well.
