Elephant kills farmer

A paddy farmer was killed by a wild elephant yesterday in the Galgamuwa area of the Kurunegala district.

The deceased has been identified as H.G. Premaratne (47), an unmarried person. The wild elephant trampled him to death behind his house at night, the inquiry revealed. Galgamuwa Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Shantha Ranaweera recorded a verdict of death due to an elephant attack.

A senior police chief in Kurunegala told the Daily News today (28) that about 26 fatal elephant attacks had occurred countrywide during past nine months.
