Samsung recently launched two new smartphones (no surprises there). These were the Samsung Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+. They are the latest in the ever-expanding universe of Samsung’s J series that apparently combine exciting design and cool features created especially for young millennials. Do they really?
Taking a closer look at the Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+
The elder brother of the two, the Samsung Galaxy J6+ packs a glass finish which is becoming increasingly common these days. They also have what Samsung calls “True HD+ Infinity Design”. This is just a fancy way of saying you get a large display. Again, we’ve seen this on devices from other brands such as Huawei and Nokia as well, so it’s nothing ground-breaking.

Both the Samsung Galaxy J6+ and Samsung Galaxy J4+ pack a Snapdragon 425 processor with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM or 32GB of internal storage with 3GB of RAM. Considering the price tag of LKR 34,000 upwards for the Galaxy J6+, we could have asked for at least a Snapdragon 600 series processor.
Not only do they offer faster performance, but also offer certain features only seen in the flagship Snapdragon 800 series as well. For example, the Nokia 6.1 at roughly the same price of LKR 30,000/- comes with a faster Snapdragon 630 processor.
The Screening process of the Galaxy J6+ and J4+
A 720×1480 resolution screen is again not that attractive. For example, the Huawei Y9 2018 packs a Full HD+ display. It does this for less than the price of the Samsung Galaxy J6+. Bringing the cameras in to focus (no pun intended), the Galaxy J6+ sports a 13 MP wide-angle lens coupled with a 5 MP depth sensor. The Galaxy J4+ sports a single 13 MP wide angle lens. Looking at the front, the devices pack 8 MP and 5 MP lenses respectively.

While the Samsung Galaxy J6+ has a dual camera setup, its video capabilities are restricted to Full HD at 30FPS. The Nokia 6.1, on the other hand, goes all the way up to 4K at 30FPS. So, if you’re looking for a smartphone with higher video recording quality, the Nokia would be the better option.
In terms of security, both devices have side mounted fingerprint sensors that according to Samsung make it easier to unlock the device. Again, that’s up to the actual user and up for debate.
So, what’s the real deal with these phones?
Samsung’s new Galaxy J6+ and J4+ are nice phones, yes. They offer a good set of specs for the price. But the question remains. Are these devices worth the price you pay? For example, the Huawei Y9 (2018) and the Nokia 6.1 may not look as good as the Samsung devices. But they are better equipped in terms of hardware.
Both the Samsung Galaxy J6+ and Samsung Galaxy J4+ offer L1 Widevine certification. It essentially means that you can stream from services such as Netflix and Amazon Video in Full HD.

If you recall, devices such as the OnePlus 5T and the Pocophone F1 were unable to do this as they were not certified for Widevine L1. Samsung seems to be capitalizing on this, making their two midrange devices certified. Whether people stream Netflix in HD remains to be seen.
If for some reason, you’re hellbent on getting a Galaxy J6+ or J4+, you can get one from Samsung Sri Lanka’s retail outlets countrywide and online partner channels as well.
