Steering Committee meeting postponed

The discussion paper containing the Draft Constitutional Amendments, had not been submitted to the Steering Committee meeting yesterday.

Committee sources said the Panel of Experts assisting the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly, was given another two weeks’ time to present the document.

The Steering Committee headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, met in Parliament yesterday, but it did not last long as the report was not ready.

It was the 77th meeting of the Steering Committee since its first meeting on April 5, 2016.

The members of the Panel of Experts include: Prof. Suri Ratnapala, Prof. Austin Pulle, Prof. A.M Navaratna Bandara, N. Selvakkumaran, Prof. Camena Gunaratne, Prof. Kapila Perera, Suren Fernando, Niran Ankatell, Asoka Gunawardena and Chamindry Saparamadu. They were appointed based on nominations from different political parties in the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee interim report was presented on September 21, while a five-day debate on it was held in November last year.
