SLFP SHOULD QUIT UNITY GOVERNMENT - SB

Former Minister S.B. Dissanayake said the SLFP should quit the Unity Government and let the UNP form their own government yesterday.

He said that his group comprising 16 SLFP parliamentarians have suggested to the Central Committee to quit the unity government.

“The CC will take a decision on whether to take this Unity Government forward after the President’s return from London next week,” Dissanayake said.

Sixteen SLFP Ministers, State Ministers and a Deputy Minister resigned from their ministerial posts after voting in favour of the impeachment presented against the Prime Minister.

Former Minister S.B. Dissanayake speaking to media at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headquarters yesterday on behalf of the team of sixteen members said their team will be no longer with the unity government and therefore they will sit with the Opposition.

He said that they will work under the chairmanship of President Maithripala Sirisena further aiming to strengthen the SLFP and the UPFA further.

“We are with the SLFP under the leadership of its Chairman, President Maithripala Sirisena to strengthen the party further and we will build a cordial rapport with leftist parties to create a broader and strong opposition” he said.

According to him their team has made a suggestion to the party Central Committee (CC) to quit from the Unity Government letting the United National Party (UNP) form their own government.

However when asked whether they will join the Joint Opposition, he stressed that they will not join the Joint Opposition, but will stay with the SLFP and the UPFA.

Even though they sit with the Opposition, the SLFP will support with every fruitful and positive move of the UNP government if the UNP forms their own government.

Former Ministers Dayasiri Jayasekara and Chandima Weerakkody said there is no use of wasting time with the Unity Government anymore and will play the role of the Opposition. They also noted that the SLFP should quit from the Unity Government and let the UNP to form their own government.

“We are keeping a cordial rapport with the JO, as the majority of the JO is SLFP parliamentarians. But at this juncture we will fulfill task of the opposition without sitting with the Joint Opposition” Dayasiri said.

“The party Central Committee should take the decision on whether to bring this Unity Government forward. That decision will be taken at the next CC meeting”, he said.

MP Dayasiri said the behaviour of both UPFA and SLFP General Secretaries cannot be accepted. But they don’t want to clean their dirty linen in public but those issues will be taken up at the CC of the party. Former Sate Minister Dilan Perera said certain SLFPers are working with the UNP secretly. According to him, the test conducted to ascertain the suitability of the Unitary Government was not a success. Parliamentarians Tharanath Basnayake, Anuradha Jayaratne and Thilanga Sumathipala also participated in the press conference.
