A 10-year-old school girl from Sooriyawewa died under tragic circumstances when she was run over by a van driven by the teacher in charge of her class on Friday.
The accident occurred when the child who was returning from school had tried to cross the road near the Sooriyawewa public fair to give a Vesak card to one of her friends from school.
The teacher, who is also a popular private tuition teacher in the area, is said to have been returning from school to one of his afternoon tuition classes.
The 47-year-old teacher has been arrested and is to be produced before Hambantota Magistrate.
