IAEA Director General to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow

 

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano will arrive in Sri Lanka on an official visit, tomorrow.

The IAEA is an independent intergovernmental, science and technology based organization which assists it’s member states to utilize nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes such as generating electricity.

Sri Lanka is a founding Member State of IAEA since 1957 and had received technical assistance through IAEA Technical Cooperation programme in ventures focused on developing nuclear science and technology in the country.

Sri Lanka had received IAEA’s assistance when establishing several nationally important scientific institutes such as Sri Lanka Gamma Center, National Centre for Non Destructive Testing, Nuclear Medicine Unit at University of Peradeniya etc.

In addition to those, the IAEA has provided training and unique equipments and instruments used in the nuclear field which cannot be purchased from the local market.
