People for coalition between UNP, President’s new movement - Ranawaka

The people’s wish is for a new coalition between the United National Party (UNP) and President Maithripala Sirisena’s new movement to govern the country, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) General Secretary and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

He also said in a statement that the same coalition should accept the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) as the leading opposition party and Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Oppostion Leader.

Minister Ranawaka further said that the Local Government election results reflect that there is a strong objection against the process of the government.

He added that due to this reason there should be radical political reforms that would address the issues of the people going beyond providing the fertiliser subsidy, Samurdhi, construction of bridges and roads and changing of the ministers.

Minister Ranawaka added that there should be a novel approach within the next 18 months.

He further said that allowing a loose democracy for the sake of Good Governance will only lead to instability.

Minister Ranawaka also said the UNP too has to make changes to their policies.

He added that it should give priority to the talented and skilful youth to make it a progressive country.

Minister Ranawaka also said the UNP should transform itself to unite all the people in the country.

“If not the UNP may lose the Provincial Council elections in September this year and April next year,” Minister Ranawaka said.

He also said that although the new party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) won the election this year, the JHU analyses the victory differently. Minister Ranawaka added that the name was only new but it was the same SLFP and the UPFA that won the election. “The truth is that the new party was the one that was led by President Maithripala Sirisena,” Minister Ranawaka said.

“The Rajapaksa group is attempting to involve the UNP and President Maithripala Sirisena’s new group in the fray with an intention to make hay while the sun shines. But, I think the people would not be misled,”he said.

He also said that what is reqired at this moment is to accept the people’s mandate humbly and build up a national alliance between the UNP and President Maithripala Sirisena’s new movement.

“The leaders of these parties should be very far sighted in this endeavour and should accept Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Opposition Leader and the SLPP as the leading opposition party in Parliament,” Minister Ranawaka added.
