‘Journalists face issues during an election’

The Press Association was established in 1955 under the leadership of Ven.Udakandawela Saranankara Thera and is the first media association created for the benefit of newspaper journalists,Sri Lanka Press Association's former Chairman Upul Janaka Jayasinghe said.

Sri Lanka Press Association held a workshop at the National Library Colombo yesterday.

Government Information Director General Sudarshana Gunawardana said elections correspond to periods of heightened media coverage and reporting."With each political party wanting to lead the country, these transitional times are often wrought with competitive language, rising tensions, and occasional violence, sometimes even resulting in violence. Journalists also face many issues during an election. As the director general, I have to care about those journalists as well,”

“There are so many women participating in the upcoming local government election and this election will be a proportional election,”he added. Elections Commission Legal Director Nimal Punchihewa, Sri Lanka Press Association Chairman Koggala Wellala Bandula and CMEV's Manjula Gajanayake participated.
