SLMC to tag along with UNP at LG polls - Hakeem

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Minister Rauff Hakeem said the Muslim Congress was in discussions to compete jointly with the United National Party in the local government elections.

Minister Hakeem said the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress would compete separately in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

City Planning and Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem made this observation at an event held at Royal Kandy Hotel after the laying of foundation stone to a Water Technology Research Unit at the Peradeniya University. The project costs Rs. 3,600 million.

Hakeem said the SLMC has already selected candidates for the local government election and observed that the election should be held without any further delay. He said there was no solid decision yet to combine Northern and Eastern provinces. He observed that there are groups spreading rumours with regard to the proposed new constitution to create unrest among the public.

He pointed out that the SLMC has proposed to keep the nine provinces and the proposal was forwarded to the steering committee of the new constitution.

He said other parties had forwarded their proposals to the new constitution as well.
