Low-lying areas in East inundated

Low-lying areas in the Ampara district are inundated due to heavy showers reported during the last few days. Several houses and business outlets are inundated. People, especially schoolchildren, are facing many hardships.

The people said relevant authorities have not taken any action to clean the drainages before the heavy showers.

Meanwhile, torrential rains which lashed the Eastern Province had also inundated several areas of Batticaloa, and Trincomalee districts. A number of main roads and some areas of the provinces were inundated.

Heavy rain and thick mist were present with the gloomy weather that was experienced in the Ampara district since last Thursday.

Thousands of acres of paddy lands have been inundated. The water levels of all tanks have increased while several trees were uprooted.

Paddy sowing operations were also disrupted, farmers said. The sea is becoming rough in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts and fishermen have not gone out to sea for fishing.
