Youth drug addiction in NWP on the rise

Kurunegala District UNP Parliamentarian and Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affais Minister S. B. Navinna revealed that the consumption of harmful drugs among the youths within the Wariyapola electorate of Kurunegala District has gone up by leaps and bounds. Police authorities and excise officials of the Kurunegala District should take early and effective measures to put an end to that unfavorable trend without any further delay, he added.

Many drug dealers are now active in and around schools and universities of the Kurunegala District, targeting senior students and undergraduates. About 350 school students who were addicted to drugs and liquor have been rehabilitated during last year from both Kurunegala and Puttalam districts of the NWP, it was revealed at that Regional Development Committee meeting held at Wariyapola under the patronage of Minister S. B. Navinna.

The Police have no authority to search inside of school premises and hence, school heads have to look into that matter, said Wariyapola Police OIC IP Nilantha Bandara.

About 248 government officials took part to that meeting.
