A workshop for journalists in the Eastern Province on the theme ‘The role of the media in promoting reconciliation among the communities,’ was organized by the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity.
It was held at Kallady Bridge View Hotel in Batticaloa yesterday, under the guidance of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The workshop aimed to familiarize Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim media personnel from Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee on the importance of the Weligama Declaration.
During the workshop, a short film was screened and discussions on reconciliation were conducted. Topics such as key areas in building reconciliation, language barriers, points to ponder upon during situations of conflict, were explained by former Media Minister and Bakeer Markar Centre President Imtiyaz Bakeer Markar, Programme Coordinator Sindekka Senatheera and Dr. M. T. M. Maheez.
