The Aruwakkalu site will be a sanitary landfill from August 10, Megalopolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
Speaking at a media briefing, he said that measures will be taken to create more sanitary landfill sites islandwide.
Ranawaka said that total disposal of waste of the country per day is between 7,000 to 8,000 tonnes while 4,000 tonnes out of it, is disposed by the Western Province. Over 1,700 tonnes of waste is being disposed daily from Colombo and suburbs, he added.
The Minister further said, “Waste to energy projects will also be implemented to generate 30 megawatts of energy from 1,500 tonnes of waste at a low price. Three international companies have been selected.
