Gamini Athukorala commemoration in Nivithigala

The ceremony to commemorate the 15th death anniversary of former Minister, late Gamini Athukorala will be held on January 1, at the Kahawatta Purana Viharaya, Nivithigala at 3.00 pm.

The ceremony will be followed by distribution of school stationery to children attending Dhamma Schools in the Kahawatta region.

Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation Former Minister Gamini Atukorale concluded his 28-year political career in 2002, just 20 days after the formation of the United National Front Government, following the UNF's victory on December 5, 2001 .

Athukorale stepped into politics in 1973 and won the election from Nivithagala electorate with 17,450, defeating the opposition by 1,655 votes in 1977, representing the United National Party (UNP).

He was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Employment in the J.R. Jayawardane cabinet in 1977.

Athukorale was appointed the Cabinet Minister of Lands, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development by President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1991.

At the 2001 General Election, Gamini Athukolare was a leading figure in bringing victory to the UNF with his great contribution in organising the ‘Jana Bala Meheyuma’ protest against former President Chandrika Bandaranayake’s regime.

Athukorale was a former General Secretary and Deputy Leader of the UNP. He died due to a cardiac arrest at his residence in Ratnapura in 2002.
