Video games are a waste of time. Well, are they? That’s what we were here to find out at the Inter-School eSports Championship 2018. Organized by GamerLK and powered by Dialog Gaming the championship took place on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2018. We saw the tournament last year as well
Entering the virtual battlefield
Walking into the main auditorium of Trace Expert City, the first thing that we noticed was the fairly large stall boasting a lineup of HyperX products. These ranged from keyboards to headsets, all designed to give gamers the extra edge they need to stay ahead of the game. Right next to it was a fully decked out PC equipped with HyperX gear.
Lock and load
Here, budding gamers could take a seat and immerse themselves in some high-end PC gaming. If you’re like me, you would have also geeked out at the PC and then tried to identify all the components in it. On the left side of the auditorium was a stall by promoting Rider Rush. The game, developed by Stafford Motor Co (Pvt) Ltd, is available for Android and iOS. Those interested could download the game, take it for a spin and stand a chance to win attractive prizes.

Showcasing the latest in gaming tech was MSI with their own stall. Complete with a number of PCs and peripherals branded by MSI, the stall was also quite popular with spectators and gamers alike taking part in it. The center of the auditorium comprised of a large LED display that was used to show matches of games that were being played at the Inter-School eSports Championship 2018.
Gearing up for the action
All of the action took place behind the screen. Multitudes of PCs spanned the rest of the auditorium, each with its own set of peripherals. The PCs were attended to by members of GamerLK walking around setting things up for the games that would be played. Each game had its own separate section, making the overall process a lot easier to cope with if you were a gamer looking to participate.

Single player titles were located towards the front of the area away from the hustle and bustle of the multiplayer titles. In addition, there were also a number of mobile games that were held as well. In terms of turnout, both days were quite well attended by spectators and participants alike. Over 100 schools registered and took part in the Inter-School eSports Championship 2018.
And the games continued
The defending champions of the Inter-School eSports Championship for 2017 which was Gateway College were back to retain their title. They faced their fair share of competition from other schools especially in titles such as Overwatch, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
After a full two days of intense gaming, the following teams and individuals were able to win the respective titles:

Despite coming in second place for these titles, Gateway College Colombo held on to the title of Overall Champion for the second year running. Thus, they walked away victorious at the Inter-School eSports Championship 2018. They were followed by Royal Institute and Gateway College Kandy. With an award ceremony celebrating the victorious endeavors of the winning schools, the Inter-School eSports Championship 2018 drew to an end. Needless to say, we are expecting bigger and better things from the next Inter-School eSports Championship.
