Police arrest 3,999 in islandwide operation

Police arrested 3,099 persons for various offences in a special 11-hour operation carried out on Friday night covering all police divisions across the island, Police Media Unit said.

The special operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was carried out from Friday 9:00 p.m. to Saturday (26) 8:00 a.m. by all police stations. Over 13,780 police officers were deployed in the operation.

The suspects arrested include 653 drunk drivers, 842 suspects in various crimes, 700 on outstanding arrest warrants and 828 suspects with heroin, other illegal drugs and illicit liquor. Seventy two persons were arrested for selling illegal liquor, consuming liquor at public places and other related offences. Four persons were arrested with illegal firearms.

Police took action against 4,967 errant motorists as well.
