Stray elephant captured at Sooriyawewa

A stray elephant that had caused harm to human lives and destroyed property and cultivations, was captured by Hambantota Wildlife officials at Weliwewa in the Sooriyawewa area.

According to Wildlife Ranger J. G. P. Vijayakumara, the said elephant had been frequently invading villages in the area. The jumbo is 10 feet tall and was estimated to be 35 years, he added.

It was also revealed that the wild elephant had several gunshot wounds on its body and Vijayakumara said that it would be relocated to a nearby forest reserve.
