Navy foils gold smuggling attempt off Mannar

Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended three Sri Lankans attempting to smuggle out 24.2 kg of gold from the country. The detection was made in the seas north of Mannar yesterday.

It is believed that the 242 gold biscuits, each weighing 100 grams are worth over Rs.150 million. A dinghy used for the smuggling was also seized by the Navy. The apprehended persons, stock of gold, dinghy and other equipment were handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for legal action.
