The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has made a historic victory since not a single political party in Opposition, had defeated the governing party at a local government election, the SLPP said yesterday.
Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader, MP Dinesh Gunawardena said a new political party had never defeated both the leading political parties in Sri Lanka’s political history as well. He added that not only the village, but most of the towns and cities have placed their trust and confidence with the SLPP.
They made these observations yesterday during a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party head office, Jayanthipura, Nelum Mawatha, Battaramulla.
MP Dinesh Gunawardena also thanked the people of the country for voting the SLPP and asked them to enjoy the victory peacefully. He also said that it is moral for the government led by the two political parties to give up power since they have been rejected by the people.
SLPP leader Prof. G.L. Peiris stated that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has been defeated than ever before under the present leadership. He said it was also moral for him to give up the party leadership as well. He pointed out even the people of the Polonnaruwa district have placed their confidence with the SLPP as it had won with more a 5,000 vote majority.
