Man arrested while trying to bribe Police

A person who had attempted to bribe a Police officer at the Meegahawatte Police, was arrested by the officers of the Commission to Investigate Bribery and Corruption yesterday.

The suspect, a 28-year-old resident of Siyambalapewatte in Delgoda, had attempted to bribe the Police in an effort to reduce the charges filed against his sister who was arrested over the possession of heroin.

The Meegahawatte Police had arrested a woman in Kelaniya who had 01 gram and 62 milligrams of heroin in her possession. The 25-year-old woman is a resident of Delgoda.

Her brother had allegedly approached the Meegahawatte Police Station Crimes Division OIC and offered to pay him a Rs. 200,000 bribe to reduce the charges on his sister.

The OIC had subsequently, notified the station OIC who had in tern informed the Bribery and Corruption Investigation Commission and arrested the man while he was trying to bribe the Police officer with a sum of Rs.130,000 in cash and a Bank card belonging to his sister in order to obtain the balance money.

The suspect woman who was arrested for the possession of heroin, was produced before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Investigations regarding the brother of the suspect who attempted to bribe the Police is being carried out by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
