Police nab Pohottuwa supporters

The Police on Sunday interrupted the distribution of free fertiliser to farmers allegedly by supporters of a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) or a Pohottuwa candidate contesting the upcoming Local Government election for the Kebithigollewa Pradeshiya Sabha.

The free fertiliser alleged to be election goods had been distributed to selected farmers in front of the house of the said female candidate from the SLPP.

The fertiliser according to the Police allegedly belongs to the Govijanaseva Department where the said SLPP candidate’s husband is an employee.

The Kebithigollewa Police said they had taken the stock of fertiliser into custody following a complaint that free fertiliser was being distributed to some selected farmers in front of the SLPP candidate’s house.

The Assistant Election Commissioner for Anuradhapura district Asanka Ratnayake said the Police had received a complaint that free fertiliser was being distributed near the house of a candidate contesting the upcoming LG polls in Kebithigollewa and they had taken immediate steps to stop it.

Ratnayake said the relevant authorities at the GovijanaSeva Department has been informed about the incident and an inquiry too will be conducted by his office to ascertain whether the fertiliser had been distributed as election goods.

He said that the Govijanaseva Department will conduct a separate inquiry into the incident.
