Tangalle ASP Thushara Daluwatte was transferred to Matara Police Division with immediate effect, Police sources said.
ASP Daluwatte is charged with assaulting a protester taken into custody during the joint opposition-led protest held at Hambantota on October 6. The Hambantota protest was held despite a restraining order by the court.
Later over 30 persons including Namal Rajapaksa MP and several other politicians affiliated to the joint opposition were arrested and remanded in connection with the incident.
The protestors had tried to enter the Indian Consular office in Hambantota forcibly prompting the police to use tear gas and water canon to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile the National Police Commission has launched a probe on the assault incident of a protester by ASP Daluwatte.
