Protest against Rohingya refugees in Mount Lavinia: Eight suspects further remanded

The eight suspects, including Ven. Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera, who were arrested for their alleged violent behaviour during a protest against the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in Mount Lavinia were further remanded yesterday

The Mount. Lavinia Magistrate’s Court re-remanded Dayarathana Thera till today while the seven other suspects were remanded till October 16, for an identification parade.

The Police arrested the suspects in connection with the protest against the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar near a UNHCR safe house at Mount Lavinia on September 26.

The protesters were calling for the immediate removal of the refugees from the Sri Lankan soil. Following the protest the Police took the Rohingya refugees under protective custody and later transferred them to the Boossa military camp for their safety. The government strongly condemned the attack and told the police to conduct a probe.

The Sri Lanka Navy had rescued the 31 Rohingya refugees travelling in a boat which had drifted into Lankan territorial waters.

The refugees had later told authorities that they were trying to flee to Australia.
